AAUW Mission and Diversity Statement
AAUW promotes equity for all women and girls,
lifelong education and positive societal change.
In principle and in practice, AAUW values and
seeks a diverse membership. AAUW will be a powerful advocate and
visible leader in equity and education through research, philanthropy,
and measurable change in critical areas impacting the lives of women
and girls. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this
organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual
orientation, national origin, disability, or class.
About the Ann Arbor Branch
The Ann Arbor Branch was established in 1902. We
currently have a membership of 320 members who represent a variety of
ages, backgrounds, and academic disciplines. Members participate
in the branch in ways to meet their own needs and interests.
Our Focus
The Ann Arbor Branch provides educational and
friendship opportunities for its members, supports community activities
especially those that have positive impact on girls and women, and
provides scholarships for women.
- Fellowship: Branch meetings and smaller groups give us time to get together and pursue
common interests.
- Branch meetings are typically held the third
Tuesday of the month, September-May. Branch meetings feature speakers and
presentations on a variety of topics and include two
luncheons per year.
- More than 30 Interest Groups provide the
opportunity for small groups to pursue specific interests. Interest
groups are open to all members and meet at intervals determined by each group.
- Scholarships: We support
scholarships for undergraduate women at the U-M, EMU, and Washtenaw
Community College. Each year we also send thousands of dollars to AAUW to fund graduate fellowships.
- Members of the Branch organize an annual
Used Book Sale that is held in September. The proceeds from the sale
fund the scholarships.
- Community Involvement: We
organize events for women and girls and join in coalitions for other
events.
- Special project teams assist with
special events that benefit girls and women in the community, such as
Brains
Rule!, a neuroscience event for middle school
students; Sister-to-Sister, a forum for middle school girls; and
the Sally Ride Festival, held at the
University of Michigan.
