  - 2007 Diversity Summit
First Annual Women's Diversity Summit

"Bicycling has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammelled womanhood."
~ Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906)

  • 130 women attended

  • 11 organizations planned and presented the event.

  • The international food spread was prepared by 36 cooks.

  • Evaluation forms overwhelmingly noted that the Summit's finest accomplishment was bringing together a broad spectrum of Washtenaw County cultures, offering an opportunity to learn more about the sponsoring organizations, and creating an opportunity for further networking.

  • The table exercise about major concerns and issues for culturally diverse women showed that the top three issues (with many sub-issues) were healthcare, education, and economic opportunity and empowerment.

  • An expanded and more detailed report on the Summit will be available on the websites of AAUW, League of Women Voters, and International Neighbors by the end of May.

  • 53 attendees indicated their interest in participating in the planning of future events. There sill be a kick-off picnic for them in July to begin planning for the next program year.
  • A most successful Diversity Summit was held at Washtenaw Community College on March 24, 2007. AAUW initiated the event with the leadership of Sally VanderVoort but the planning and execution included eleven local organizations. There were 130 women attendees and 30 of them prepared samples of their ethnic cuisine. After an introductory exercise, and food tasting the women were seated at tables which were deliberately diversified. Table exercises creatively explored their commonalities and their concerns. These culturally diverse women selected healthcare, education, economic opportunity and empowerment of women as their chief concerns.

A more detailed report on the Summit will be available here by the end of May. Fifty three women indicated a desire to help plan future events. There will be a kick-off picnic for them in July to begin planning for the next program year.
