AAUW Ann Arbor – Supporting Women’s Education at Every Level, Nationally
and Locally Our Branch has contributed more
than $250,000 toward scholarships
over the last 10 years. Thanks to the
success of the 57th Annual Used Book Sale, the Branch was able to
give $30,200 to support AAUW
fellowships and local scholarships in 2009.
In addition to supporting AAUW
endowments at the national level, the Ann Arbor Branch funds the Mary Markley
Scholarship and scholars selected by the Center for the Education for Women at
the University of Michigan; a scholarship at Eastern Michigan University; and
scholarships at Washtenaw Community College.
We also give an award to one graduating senior at each of the six public
high schools in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Meet Our High
School Scholarship Recipients for 2010

Brittany Bargert
from Ypsilanti High School is interested in helping others. Brittany
has taken accelerated classes such as AP Biology, Psychology, and Statistics. Her
goal after becoming involved in a high school Health Occupations class is to be
a radiologist.
Katie Carpenter
from Pioneer High School
has participated in the popular Theater Guild program in high school and is a
talented singer. She would like to major in psychology with a minor in
music. Katie's goal is to "serve mankind," and she hopes that
her education will help her do that.
Jasmine Franco
from Huron High School continued to
live alone in a trailer after her parents from Guatemala were deported after living l8
years in the United States. Jasmine had to work nights and attend school.
Despite this trauma,
she wishes to work toward becoming a registered nurse or pediatrician. Thus,
she is very thankful for the award of this scholarship. Her counselor
describes her as "diligent, persistent, loving, and responsible and
someone who will make
good use of her college degree.” Brittany Hayes
from Stone School was honored by
N.A.A.C.P. as a high school scholar, the only one from her school. She
plans to work toward a degree in art with the hopes of teaching art and
displaying her work in a gallery. She is a strong leader, having participated
in the Positive Peer Influence program and written for the Stone Chronicles, her school paper. She decided to attend Washtenaw Community College
in order to be close to the son she is raising independently.
Sarah Kirby from Community High School
wants to pursue a career in art therapy. Sarah is already an artist who works
with clay as well as drawing and painting. She hopes that her career
will lead her to use art in assisting people to work through their
feelings. As a young woman of many
talents, Sarah also worked as a member of the Yearbook staff.
Tierra Vincent from Roberto
Clemente School has been a youth counselor, a Premier Staff finder, and
received an award for academic excellence. Tierra would like to be a homicide
detective and already believes she would like a master's degree to assist her in
her career choice.
